a spokeswoman for the united states postal service is live with us from newtown to give me a sense of just what's happening there. christine, if you can, let me know what you're receiving. what sort of things you're seeing coming in and how much is coming in. >> we started out, ashleigh, receiving a few hundred pieces of mail. and now it's in the thousands every day. it ranges from packages to letters to cards as you say. much of it is becoming express mail. that's how important it is for people to send their love and support to the folks here in newtown to help them cope with the tragedy. >> and not to suggest with that many pieces of mail that you've been able to see. the addresses, who they're coming to, who they're coming from, but can you give me a sense of -- is this from all over the world? is it primarily from here in the united states? and who are they addressing it to? >> some of these packages and letters are addressed simply to the school to the residents of sandy hook, to the first responders, or to families of individual children. they're coming as far away as sicily, england, aus
from newtown, connecticut, is what seems like the inevitability now that the next united states secretary of state is going to be massachusetts democratic senator john kerry. nbc news has been able to confirm that senator kerry will be nominated for that job by president obama likely sometime this week. senator kerry is not expected to face significant opposition in the senate. if he does become secretary of state, that, of course, would mean a special election in massachusetts for his senate seat. that has to happen 145 to 160 days after the seat becomes vacant. one of the mamz rising to the top of the list is a potential john kerry replacement in the senate is vicky kenny. vicky kennedy, the widow of the late senator ted kennedy. asked by local news outlets whether she might be up for this job, a spokeswoman for vicky kennedy said, "we have no comment on this at this time." in other words, stay tuned. finally, another state that has just dealt with what massachusetts is contemplating right now, the prospect of replacing a long-time senator, is the state of south carolina. toda
blitzer in newtown, connecticut. we'd like to welcome our viewers from the united states and around the world. today students took their first tentative steps towards some semblance of normality. most of the schools reopened but not the sandy hook elementary school. we learned today that the students of that school, the site of friday's last shooting, won't resume classes until january. also, the connecticut's medical examiner revealed that nancy lanza was shot four times in the head while she was sleeping. he also says adam lanza died of a single gunshot wound to the head fired from a handgun. significantly, the medical examiner also disclosed that he's been told lanza was diagnosed with asperger's syndrome. officials say they are working to determine whether that diagnosis was correct. our national correspondent, susan candiotti, spoke with an acquaintance of the la lanzas a she's joining us now. >> reporter: wolf, this is the home where the shooter adam lanza lived with his mother and whether police say he shot and killed his mother as she was sleeping in her bedroom. as you indi
years old, all first graders. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer, reporting here from newtown, connecticut. let's bring in our national correspondent, susan candiotti. she is joining us with more information, the very latest on the investigation, what are you learning, susan? >> reporter: hi, wolf, we're not going to dwell on the shooter's name, but he is twenty-year-old adam lanza, and we're learning today more on how vicious the attacks were. this information coming to us from the chief medical examiner. >> all the wounds that i know of at this point were caused by the weapon. i only did seven of the autopsies. the victims i had ranged from three to eleven, and i only saw two of them with close range shooting. this is a sample, i really don't have more information. the bullets are designed in such a fashion that the energy -- this is very clinical, i shouldn't be saying this. but the energy deposited in the tissue, so the bullet stays in. >> reporter: now the long weapon that the chief medical examiner referred to is one of the
news. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett tonight. in newtown, connecticut, it is the scene of one of the worst school shootings in the history of the united states and we can report for you that police have now identified a school shooter as adam lanza. a shooter who killed 26 people today at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police
